New riches

Nouveau Riche means new rich (in French), someone who has recently come to have lots of money rather then having inherited their wealth. In the age of the internet this is something we hear about and marvel at often. The creators of sites like Facebook, Youtube, Mozilla, DeviantArt and others were all young people who are now insanely rich thanks to their ideas and hard work. Rags to riches stories have huge appeal to people since they make us feel hope and let us continue dreaming. I know I certainly hope to make more money on the internet, I want nothing more then not to have to go to a job I hate every morning.

Mobile Broadband for the EEEpc

Since I have the wireless internet all set up at home for the EEEpc so I can work upstairs and downstairs, I’m now looking for a way to get mobile broadband going. So far neither of the places I’ve tried support Linux (and usually ask me “what is Linux”?) so I’m going to have to either install Windows on there or keep trying to find a place which supports Linux. I hope I find somewhere, it will be great to be even more mobile.

Portland Cement

What is Portland Cement?
Portland cement is the name of the most commonly used type of cement in the world. It’s composed of a combination of calcium silicate and a mix of aluminum and iron. Ordinary Portland Cement is used for just about any type of construction which uses concrete, some types of grout and mortar. There are two methods of producing Portland cement. One is a dry method, in which the materials stay dry throughout the entire process, and the other is a wet method, in which water is added to the raw mix. The finished product, fine powder Portland cement is usually sold in bulk as large truckloads.

Niche blogging

I was having a beer with a friend yesterday and we got to talking about blogging about narrow focused topics like reviewing all the different hotels where you travel to and things like that. Something that we might already do in our day to day lives but incorporating that into a blog of some sort. It would be so much fun to do something like that. Obviously such ideas are not unique but I guess each individual has different things they like to do and different opinions on things.

Popbandit

If you are a fan of any particular celebrity, a movie, band or other pop culture thing you might find popbandit to be just the thing you are looking for. Popbandit lets you search for who or whatever you would like more info on, for example Get Smart and lets users subscribe to recommendations on the topic. For each search you will see related items, users that have subscribed to that item, comments, and other related content from around the web. Google and wikipedia search options are also given for every item, as well as sharing options for site users and visitors.

If an item doesn’t have any recommendations or results you may create a page on your chosen topic which is a pretty cool feature. Each custom page does have to be manually approved however before it goes live, so it does need to contain useful content or at least nothing offensive in nature.

So if this is something you are interested in than head over to PopBandit and search for anything from Weeds Season 3 DVD
to Tom Petty, find interesting info, the latest news and be notified of new items as they become available. Great for fans who want to be kept up to date.

Weekly update

This week I did not do as much work as I would have liked. I did create a wordpress theme which I do wat to do more of though. But I don’t get paid for those directly so the money is not as good this week. Releasing new themes though does make my site more valuable to visitors so it’s worth doing. I would love to buy them but all the themes for sale either don’t come with full rights, are not that great or they cost a fortune.

Kasey got her first school report which was an interesting read, one teacher said she is a “lovely child” lol so really I can’t complain. She needs to keep working on her numbers especially from 10 to 20 and on hopping on her left foot lol.

Today is the last day of school so chances are there won’t be much posting here for the next couple of weeks unless I get lots of spare time somehow. But I am determined we are not spending two weeks sitting around.

Prostate cancer and HIFU treatment

HIFU is a non invasive cancer treatment which can be used to treat a variety of cancers including bone, breast, prostate, kidney, testes and others. It works by heating the diseased cells to a high temperature and destroying them. it can be very tightly focused to only target a small group of cells.
At internationalhifu the Sonablate 500 is being used to treat prostate cancer which has a Neuro-Vascular Bundle Detector which makes it possible to detect the erectile nerves during treatment, thus avoiding damaging them. The Sonablate 500 however is not available for use in the US so treatment must be sought internationally.

Attic transformation

The latest addition to my Google feedreader is a blog called Design*Sponge. I had one look at the fantastic site layout and I knew I would become a fan. Anyway today they had this post about an attic restoration project with before and after photos. They did such a fantastic job. I love the idea of finding new living space in an existing home (in fact it tends to be a recurring dream of mine) such as attics or basements or making use of a flat roof.

Domain name scorecard

If you have a web site you are no doubt aware of the importance of having bought a good domain name. If your name is easy to remember and relates well to your chosen topics you are already well ahead of many and customers or readers will not be struggling to find that web site that they visited once and really liked but can’t find again.

At the moment Network Solution is offering a free domain name analysis where you can answer three questions about your domain name and it tells you how well your domain name scored. At the end you also get a few suggestion of more domain names which are either popular misspellings of your domain or are variations of it.

You can also see if other extensions of your domain are taken (such as the .net or .org versions) I noticed busyblogger.net was taken but it’s just parked at the moment and is not in use. While this is not really a big issue for me it could be an issue if you run a business and your competitor registers your domain with a different extension and begins to attract some of the business your site could have had, had you registered the domain name yourself.

EEE pc update

This is my third day of using the eee pc now. I still haven’t encountered many problems. I’ve switched to using a mouse instead of the touchpad and that has helped speed things up a fair bit. The keyboard is small and I make a fair few typing mistakes on it but I enjoy using it so I most likely won’t attach a full sized keyboard.

My only problem so far is when a window pops up which is not scrollable. The small screen size meas it usually doesn’t fit on the screen and sometimes there is no visible way to turn off the thing. Wordpress’ “add an image” option is one such window and I can’t use it properly so I had to find other ways of getting an image into Wordpress like uploading it manually and linking to it from the post.

Still I think it has helped me be much more productive and just the power savings alone from not running the PC all the time makes me feel happy. I will be interested in seeing if there’s any noticeable difference in the electricity bill. The eee pc only draws about 25W or less if I remember correctly when it’s running and charging the battery at the same time compared to a PC which draws 200+ W.
