Looking poor even when you’re not?

There is a post here talking about the benefits of looking poor even when you’re not. While the article doesn’t mention anything too earth shattering, the comments are a great read.
Do you worry about what people think? Personally I don’t, as long as I don’t do anything that reflects badly on my daughter (for example I wouldn’t want her to get teased about what I look like) so I make an effort to look ok but I don’t ever worry about how rich I look. In fact I’d be kind of scared to in case I get mugged or something. But I’m thinking that the majority of people don’t feel this way, going for the horrendously expensive rather then the practical in order to keep up an image?
